Confusing the two is like looking for a code where it is not needed or ignoring a transparent connection that is already available.
EAP-SIM Authentication on FreeWifi Secure: Why the Connection Code is Obsolete
On the FreeWifi_secure network, identification is transmitted via the EAP-SIM protocol. The device directly reads the IMSI of the Free SIM card inserted in the phone and sends it to Free’s RADIUS server for validation. No username, no password.
In practical terms, the only technical requirement is to have an active Free Mobile SIM card, regardless of the plan subscribed. The smartphone must support EAP-SIM authentication mode in its Wi-Fi settings, which is the case for almost all recent Android devices and iPhones.
During the first connection, you need to select the SSID FreeWifi_secure, then choose “SIM” as the EAP method. The network then registers, and reconnection becomes automatic as soon as a compatible hotspot is detected. We recommend checking that the network has not been “forgotten” in the settings after a system update, as some updates reset saved Wi-Fi profiles.

The FreeWifi network (without the “secure” suffix) uses a classic captive portal. Upon connection, a web page opens and requests a username and password. These credentials are unique to each Freebox subscriber.
Activation and Retrieval of wifi.free.fr Credentials
The credentials are not those of the subscriber area. They are generated on the wifi.free.fr portal, accessible only from the wired or Wi-Fi connection of your own Freebox. The form requires the landline phone number associated with the line and the password of the main account.
Once authenticated, the portal displays a username/password pair dedicated to the community FreeWifi network. This pair remains valid as long as the Freebox subscription is active. In case of forgetfulness, simply return to wifi.free.fr from your box to regenerate new credentials.
- Connect to the local network of your Freebox (Ethernet or personal Wi-Fi, not FreeWifi)
- Open wifi.free.fr in a browser and enter your Free landline number
- Note or store the generated username and password, valid on all FreeWifi hotspots in the Freebox network

Case of Free Mobile Subscribers Without a Freebox
A Free Mobile subscriber who does not own a Freebox does not have access to the wifi.free.fr portal. The only option remains FreeWifi_secure via EAP-SIM. The old codes shared by postal mail at the time of launch are no longer distributed.
Security of the Public Free Wifi Network and Log Retention Obligations
The community FreeWifi network remains a public unencrypted hotspot. The traffic between the device and the access point is transmitted in clear text. An attacker positioned on the same segment can intercept HTTP requests, session cookies, and DNS resolutions.
We observe that many users consider FreeWifi to be equivalent to their home network. The fundamental difference lies in encryption: the personal Wi-Fi of a Freebox uses WPA2 or WPA3, while the FreeWifi SSID does not apply any encryption at the radio level.
From the operator’s side, French regulations require log retention for one year. Free, as the operator broadcasting these hotspots via its subscribers’ Freeboxes, retains metadata (MAC address, timestamp, assigned IP address). This data is governed by GDPR and is only accessible upon judicial request.

Protecting Your Session on a FreeWifi Hotspot
The minimum requirement is to check that every site visited uses HTTPS. A VPN encrypts all traffic between the device and the VPN server, making local interception unusable.
- Activate a VPN before any browsing on FreeWifi (not on FreeWifi_secure, where EAP encryption already protects the authentication layer)
- Disable automatic reconnection to the SSID “FreeWifi” to avoid connecting unknowingly in an unfamiliar location

Troubleshooting Free Wifi Connection: Common Errors and Network Solutions
The most common error on FreeWifi_secure is the message “authentication failed.” In most cases, the device does not have the EAP-SIM method selected, or the SIM card is not recognized (Free SIM disabled, eSIM not properly provisioned).
On the FreeWifi captive portal, the login page does not display if the browser forces HTTPS on all requests. The captive portal redirects an initial HTTP request. Temporarily disabling the “HTTPS only” mode in the browser or manually opening http://wifi.free.fr triggers the display of the login page.
Another trap: some Freeboxes have the “community Wi-Fi sharing” feature disabled by their owner in the management interface mafreebox.freebox.fr. The FreeWifi SSID is then simply not broadcast by this box, even if other nearby hotspots may be.
If the speed obtained on a FreeWifi hotspot is very low, it is generally related to the bandwidth of the Freebox owner. Community traffic is limited and does not take priority over the domestic traffic of the subscriber hosting the hotspot. Moving a few dozen meters may sometimes be enough to find a less congested Freebox.
The FreeWifi network remains a useful complement for Free subscribers, provided that the two SSIDs and their access mechanisms are clearly distinguished. For regular mobile use, FreeWifi_secure with EAP-SIM is the most reliable and safest method, with no code to remember.
